As anyone whose ever experienced back pain and sciatica can attest, the day-to-day grind can feel pretty miserable when you’re walking around in constant discomfort. Manual therapy and mechanical traction were once the main methods used by chiropractors and physiotherapists to relieve pain from conditions. However, these techniques were often unsuccessful, so much so that mechanical traction is no longer used as a treatment. Enter IDD therapy treatment.

In the last decade, however, IDD therapy has given specialists greater options and results in helping patients. This spinal decompression treatment is non-surgical and non-invasive and has given patients with chronic back pain greater options when looking for an effective course of treatment.

What is IDD therapy treatment & spinal decompression?

Short for intervertebral differential dynamics, IDD therapy was first introduced in the USA back in the late 1990s. It was initially developed as a way to help with unresolved back issues such as a disc problem. Using a combination of computer-controlled science and physics IDD therapy helps decompresses and mobilise targeted spinal segments helping to relieve the pressure on the injured disc.

How does IDD Therapy work?

As mentioned earlier IDD works by decompression, SPINA machines are used for this process. The patient lies comfortably on the machine and two harnesses are fitted around the chest and at the pelvis, the machine then applies computer-controlled and precisely measured decompression to help open up the spaces in between the vertebrae, removing the pressure from the affected disc.

SPINA machines can apply higher pulling forces than manual techniques and because of their high precision and ability to target individual segments of the spine, IDD has become a highly effective way to treat conditions like a herniated or bulging disc, reducing pain, numbness and lack of mobility without the need for surgical treatments or spinal injections.

As with all long-term spinal column problems involving discs and nerves, the issue requires a plan of treatment, sometimes up to 20 sessions for effective pain relief. Unfortunately, there is still no miracle treatment that can cure chronic back conditions in just a couple of physical therapy sessions. It is still also important to discuss your treatment with a specialist as some conditions may be too severe to treat with IDD alone.

IDD Therapy can be key to helping a back problem heal

IDD therapy treatment can help improve mobility in the affected part of the spine and the intervertebral discs thanks to a series of stretches during treatment. These gentle and rhythmic motions are almost undetectable to the patient but can help improve stiffness and tension, aid recovery, increase range of motion and relieve pain.

Over time this type of disc treatment can help patients regain mobility and improve poor posture and increase function, this in itself can help reduce the likelihood of repeat spinal nerve conditions.
