Sciatica West Midlands
Sciatica is caused by the longest nerve in your body (The Sciatic Nerve) which runs from your pelvis, through the hips, buttocks and down each leg. It branches out down the legs, giving feeling to your legs and feet as well as controlling most muscles in the legs. The Sciatic nerve can sometimes radiate pain, which is usually caused by an underlying problem putting pressure on your lower back. Nerve compression may be the cause of this problem (bulging or herniated lumbar disc). Piriformis Syndrome is also a common cause for Sciatica. It is a muscle that lies directly over the Sciatic nerve, and when becomes to tight, or has a spasm, it puts direct pressure on the Sciatic nerve. If you have Sciatica and based in the West Midlands, the Central Chiropractic is based in Coventry centre and is easily accessible from most areas within West Midlands and Warwickshire.
How do I know if I have Sciatica?
Pain that radiates from your lower spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is most likely sciatica. You may experience numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the affected leg. This pain can be sometimes a slight discomfort, and sometimes extremely painful and long lasting. Sciatic pain often starts gradually and intensifies over time.
How is Sciatica Treated?
Sciatica is usually treated by a series of stretches and excercises, deep tissue musles massage and chiropractic care. In worse cases where there is severe and excrutiating pain, it maybe necessary to have Epidural steroid injections. Doctors inject a corticosteroid medication into the affected area.
Corticosteroids mimic the effects of the hormones cortisone and hydrocortisone, Corticosteroids suppress inflammation around the irritated nerve therefore giving pain relief.
Possible Causes for Sciatica
- Age - As you get older, your body deterioates. By your late 20s you are likely to have some kind of deterioration in your disks in your lower back. You may have had an injury from a sport or accident earlier on which will also weaken your lower back.
- Job - Heavy lifting, twisting and driving vehicles for extended periods of time, or sitting down in an office most of the day makes you more prone to developing Sciatica.
- Diabetes - Diabetes affects the way you use the sugar in your blood and therefore increases the risk of damaging your sciatic nerve.
When to seek medical advice
- You experience sudden, severe pain in your low back or ether or both legs and numbness or muscle weakness in ether or both of the legs
- You have trouble controlling your bowels or bladder. Seek medical advice urgently.
- The pain follows a injury, from a traffic or work related accident
Lasting Effects of Sciatica
People can recover from Sciatica, however, sometimes it can cause nerve damage and have quite sever effects to your lower body:
- Loss of feeling, may affected one or both or legs.
- Loss of movement may affected one or both legs
- Loss of bowel or bladder function
Prevention
There are many things we can do to prevent the Sciatic Nerve from being inflamed, these include:
- Regular Excercise
- Maintain proper posture when you sit - keep your feet on the floor, and your arms on the desk or arms of the chair
- Driving - don't overreach and keep your hips and knees level
- General Posture - Being aware of how you stand and lifting heavy objects, how you sleep.
