History of Physiotherapy.

And why some Chiropractic Manipulations have been adopted into Physiotherapy.

Physiotherapy can be traced back to Ancient Greece B. C. Since then, physiotherapy has evolved from simple massage to a portfolio of therapies with many specialized applications.

Ancient Greeks practiced a physiotherapy technique called "hydrotherapy” which translates from Greek as water treatment. Physiotherapist’s today still employ hydrotherapy, which as now evolved and adapted specifically to various patient conditions.

In 1894, Britain recognised physiotherapy as a specialized branch of nursing regulated by a Chartered Society. In the succeeding two decades, physiotherapy programs were established in other countries including New Zealand in 1912 and in America 1913. In American physiotherapy, the first record was at Walter Reed College and hospital of Portland, Oregon where nurses with physical education experience worked as reconstruction aides.

These reconstruction aides contributed to the recovery and rehabilitation of many patients including World War 1 causalities.

In 1921, Mary McMillan formed the Physical Therapy Association of America and subsequently renamed the APTA; this organization influenced the development of physiotherapy in America.

The outbreak of the polio epidemic of the 1920's was a monumental turning point for the physiotherapy profession.

After the polio epidemic subsided, physiotherapy treatments comprised mainly exercise, massage and traction. In the 1950’s Chiropractic manipulations, were incorporated into physiotherapy initially into Britain and now the practice is world wide. The Orthopedics specialty within physiotherapy also emerged at about the same time.

From about the 1960’s physiotherapy expanded from hospitals out to other areas of medical care. Research has been a feature of modern physiotherapy, dating from the first research study publication in 1920’s Research continues in a wide range of specialties.
The 1980's, technology became the focus of change in physiotherapy. New Procedures featured electrical stimulation and ultrasound and computers.
Throughout development of the Physiotherapy profession, training and techniques have continued to change and improve and will undoubtedly will continue to do so.
