Neck pain is a common problem which can dramatically reduce your quality of life.
What is Neck Pain?

Many people will suffer from neck pain at some time in their lives. Whether your neck feels tense in the evening after a long day sat at a desk, or you have been suffering for many months, an aching neck can cause real discomfort, even when you are sleeping on a memory foam mattress.

Your neck is less protected than your spine, and has to support the 5kg weight of your head, which makes it susceptible to a multitude of injuries. Muscles, ligaments and nerves can all become damaged, and soft tissue damage is one of the most common conditions experienced by sufferers of neck pain.

How Can We Help?

Here at the Central Physiotherapy & Chiropractic Clinic, we offer Cold Laser Therapy, which is proven to be one of the simplest yet most effective methods of pain relief for neck pain Warwickshire. This non-invasive treatment will stimulate your cells and increase blood flow to your neck, aiding the healing process and providing some much needed relief from your pain. Over ten to twelve sessions you will begin to see an improvement, and although we can never guarantee complete relief from pain, we do believe that this therapy is an effective way to reduce your discomfort.

When neck pain Warwickshire is causing you to suffer, make sure you visit the Central Physiotherapy & Chiropractic Clinic for the expert advice and effective pain relief you need to begin enjoying your life once more.

Neck Pain Treatment for a Trapped or Pinched Nerve around the Neck

Neck Entrapments

What is a neck nerve entrapment?

Neck nerve entrapment is commonly known as a trapped or pinched nerve in most cases it is an excruciating pain that may start in the neck and may radiate into one shoulder or the other. It may also travel into the arms and fingers which is known as cervical radiculopathy. The pain from a trapped or pinched nerve can be relentless, excruciating and debilitating. Sleep is almost impossible to come by even with the strongest prescribed medication.

Prescribed Medication

Medications only mask the symptoms and rarely work or dull the pain and the medication you have been prescribed may be so strong that it can affect your daily activities. It is also important to realise tht there may health and safety implications at your place of work. This must be taken into account on grounds of safety, for instance driving on prescribed medication. To drive under the influence of certain drugs is a criminal offence- this can also be true for certain prescribed medications.

Chiropractic and Cold or Low Level Laser Pain Relief

There is natural pain relief that has been proven to help relieve the pain that comes with a trapped nerve in the neck area. British Chiropractic Association registered Chiropractors are experts in dealing with neck entrapment. A Chiropractor will gently manipulate the trapped or pinched nerve free. This is by far the fastest and most effective method, bringing fast effective pain relief. There is also further significant pain relief to be had through a modality known as Cold or low level laser therapy; this modality has a five star rating for pain relief and is used at this clinic. Further information can be found under our listing “Pain Relief”. This must surely be the better way than taking the strongest prescribed pain medication.

Causes of neck entrapment

There are many structures around the neck that may cause a trapped or pinched. Neck entrapment may occur as a result of an old or new injury such as whiplash (WAD) or another medical condition. However, for most people this could be the result of an injury known by various names such as a bulging, prolapsed, herniated or slipped disc. This condition involves the discs – the soft gel-like structures positioned between the vertebrae in your neck and spine. When one or more of them slips- the nerves around can get trapped or pinched in between the disc and the vertebrae resulting in excruciating pain.

A bulging, prolapsed, herniated or slipped disc is not the only cause of a trapped or pinched nerve in the area of the neck. Sleeping in an awkward position can cause a trapped or pinched nerve leading to excruciating pain in the head, neck or shoulders. This is probably the most common cause of a trapped or pinched nerve in the neck. However, there is likely to be an excruciating pain for several weeks if not months. Ice packs will help to alleviate the swelling and the inflammation that accompany a trapped or pinched nerve.

How does it feel?

Sometimes the trapped nerve can be painless however, in the most cases the common symptom is severe pain. The pain may be felt in the neck arm, or chest. Weakness may occur in the shoulder.

What should you do?

Nerve entrapments in the neck do not get better on their own; they need manipulation and GP/doctor prescribed medications will rarely work if the cause of the entrapment is not treated. If you have or suspect you have a nerve entrapment, consult a Chiropractor who is an expert in dealing with trapped nerves.

What shouldn’t you do?

If you have an entrapped nerve in the neck, do not ignore the problem. This can lead to a very long and very painful recovery.

Could there be any long-term effects?

Nerve entrapments in the neck may not produce any long-term effects as long as they are properly diagnosed and appropriately treated. If the source of the neck pain is not treated, wasting of the muscles may occur.

Management

Seeking advice from a registered B C A. Chiropractor is important in the treatment of an entrapped nerve in the shoulder. Initially a chiropractor can assist in diagnosing the cause of the problem and establishing its severity. Manipulation of the shoulder and the surrounding area will be the best course of action, and far better than the conventional route – “Surgery” or long term administration of “Prescribed Medication”. Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy is a modality with a five star rating for pain relief and the acceleration of the healing process. Cold laser Therapy: more information on this modality can be found listed under “Pain Relief “section

Neck Pain Warwickshire. We carry out quality neck treatments for all types of neck pain in Warwickshire. We treat patients within the Warwickshire area, who have various neck pain conditions such as: neck sprain, neck strain, tendonitis, wry neck, torticollis, Cervical disc treatment and neck pain relief for cervical spine injuries including bulging discs, herniated discs, slipped discs and other types of back and neck pain spinal conditions. Cervical spine injuries, whiplash injuries (Whiplash Associated Disorder), osteoarthritis, (Wear & Tear), nerve pain. We also offer treatment for neck pain and related conditions such as neck and shoulder pain, scapula pain, arm pain, hand pain, wrist pain and headaches, as well as pins and needles, tingling, numbness, deadness, heaviness and weakness of the neck, shoulder and arm.

Neck Pain Warwickshire

Neck Pain Treatments, Signs & Symptom,.The neck or “cervical spine” has 7 vertebrae that allow the head and neck to move freely in all directions with a considerable amount ease. If one or all of these vertebrae become misaligned or stressed in some way, then symptoms are not far away. Most of the time, just like the rest of the body, we take the head and neck for granted.

When there is an injury or too much biomechanical stress is put on any one or number of these vertebrae, then if not immediate, in time symptoms will occur. The main symptom patients present with is pain – “it hurts!” Other symptoms may include muscle tension and tightness, aching muscles, tiring muscles after certain activities or towards the end of the day, sharp pain, pins and needles, numbness, weakness. Any of these symptoms can occur not just at any part of the spine, but can also radiate out into the arms or into the head too causing headaches

Many people think because the neck is smaller than the low back or lumbar spine, that it doesn’t undergo much physical stress on a daily basis. This simply isn’t true; in actual fact the neck undergoes considerable stress on a daily basis. The head itself does weigh a lot more than we realize. Imagine the weight of a bowling ball, it is then easier to appreciate the forces required to just keep the head held high in the upright position. The head doesn’t just balance on its own; there are many ligaments and muscles to prevent it from dropping forwards etc.

We must not forget that although textbooks describe the neck as a distinct region in itself, it still has physical attachments to the ribs, thoracic spine, shoulder blade etc.

Neck pain can be caused by a problem with any of the areas it is physically attached to. Just like leg pain is often caused by a problem with the lower back, buttock or hip.

Caution – It can be potentially dangerous to drive when suffering with shoulder, neck or even low back pain. Try to find a clinic that has a good reputation (ideally by recommendation) and a clinic that is as close to you as possible. Also, you may find it easier if you find a clinic where you don’t have to climb stairs or cross busy main roads. If you are in severe pain, then disabled access can make your visit run much more smoothly too.

What Do I do Now

The first thing to do is follow these simple steps:

1) Rest – try to reduce any activities that you think might aggravate the condition.

This may include reducing time at your computer, decreasing or stopping sporting activities or hobbies and try to limit the distance you drive on a daily basis (particularly after treatment). Most people don’t realise how much the shoulder and surrounding musculature have to work whilst driving.

2) Ice – If the area is painful, warm/hot or tender to touch, then the use of regular ice packs can help reduce the pain and inflammation. Please refer to our other section on the correct use of ice packs.

3) Compression – When using the ice pack, try to compress the ice pack onto the affected area so there is good contact and the surface area of the ice pack covers the affected area.

4) Elevation – Elevating the affected area also helps slow down the build up of excess fluid in the affected area.

5) Chiropractic Appointment – Whether you are an existing patient or even if it is your first time, make an appointment to see the chiropractor/physiotherapist. The therapist can will take a good history, examine you and advise the most appropriate course of action. If it is safe to proceed with treatment, then the therapist will start to address your problem(s).

If treatment is necessary, the chiropractor will begin treatment. Treatment may include manipulation, mobilization, acupuncture or even Laser Therapy (please refer to our section on Low Level Laser Therapy.

Neck Shoulder Pain

What is it?

Acceleration – deceleration injury to the neck (Whiplash or WAD) refers to the injury to any of a number of structures in the neck as a result of Whiplash (WAD). These include ligaments, muscles and in severe cases the bones i.e Cervical Vertebrae

How does it happen?

Acceleration, deceleration injury to the neck is a common injury in motor vehicle accidents and contact sports and extreme sports such as Skiing and Rugby. In most instances the head is either violently thrust forward or backward on impact, and injury to the structures in the neck results.

There are two types of whiplash injury that may affect the neck and shoulders :

Typical cervical hyper-extension injuries occur in passengers and drivers of a stationary or slow-moving vehicle that is struck from behind. The body is thrown forward but the head lags behind, resulting in hyper-extension of the neck. When the head and neck have reached maximum extension, the neck then snaps into flexion.

A rapid deceleration injury throws the head forwards and flexes the neck. When the chin hits the chest it limits forward flexion but the forward movement may be sufficient to cause longitudinal distraction and neurological damage. Hyper-extension may occur in the subsequent recoil.

Whiplash injuries may occur at relatively low vehicle velocity impacts. One study showed the cervical muscle injury threshold to be about 10 km/hour. Whiplash associated disorders (WAD) can be classified by the severity of signs and symptoms:

Grade 1: no complaints or physical signs.

Grade 2: indicates neck and /or shoulder complaints but no physical signs.

Grade 3: indicates neck and / or shoulder complaints and musculoskeletal signs.

Grade 4: neck and / or shoulder complaints and neurological signs.

Grade 5: neck and / or shoulder complaints dislocation and fracture. Most cervical spine fractures occur predominantly at two levels:

One third of injuries occur at the level of C2, and one half of injuries occur at the level of C6 or C7.

Most fatal cervical spine injuries occur in upper cervical levels, either at cranio-cervical junction C1, or at C2.

How does it feel?

At time of accident or impacted there may be little or no pain or any apparent injury, Therefore, depending on the severity of the injury, there will be a gradual increase in the intensity of the pain over the following few days or weeks. Pain is usually felt in the neck and/or shoulders, and occasionally in the head, this might produce the onset of headaches, with the possibility of tingling sensations radiating into one or both arms. This may be accompanied either by a dull ache or a sharp pain which is made worse by movement. In nearly all cases a restriction may be apparent, this may prevent full motion of the neck. The pain may be in the middle of the neck, or to one or both sides of the neck, which may also radiate into the head, shoulders or arms. In severe Whiplash (WAD) cases, pain may felt in the upper, mid and lower back .

What should you do?

If you have had a Whiplash (WAD) episode you should seek advice and treatment from a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist. An x-ray is important to rule out a vertebral fracture. Chiropractors are the most likely to have this facility on site, or go along to your Local A & E. When this is done and there is no evidence of a vertebral fracture, you may wish to proceed with treatment.

Ideally, Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy should be administered, this modality accelerates the healing process in the area of the injury, thus signifagantly reducing swelling and inflammation, this modality will also provide significant pain relief for this injury, a five star rating has been awarded to Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy, and more information can be found about Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy, listed under our “Pain Relief” section, including a review published in the doctors, GPs, favourite medical journal “The Lancet”on Low Level Laser Therapy for neck pain,

What shouldn’t you do?

If you have had an acceleration, deceleration injury, you shouldn’t ignore the problem and continue to exercise. This may lead to your problem getting worse, resulting in a prolonged and painful recovery. In addition, avoid activities which aggravate your pain.

Could there be any long-term effects?

Symptoms include excruciating pain in the neck and shoulder region, this may radiate into the shoulders, arms, back and Legs, and there may also be burning sensations in the hands and feet. Mild–moderate acceleration or deceleration injury usually does not produce any long-term effects, as long it is properly diagnosed and the correct treatment appropriately applied. Recovery in a mild–moderate case usually takes a matter of weeks or several months. A severe case, however, can occasionally lead to degeneration of the discs in the neck and joint damage, resulting in long-term altered mobility, neck/back and shoulder pain problems.

Management

The advice and assistance from a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist is important in the treatment of an acceleration or deceleration injury. Initially, they can assist in diagnosing the problem and in determining its severity. This may require the use of imaging techniques such as Digital-x-ray, CT scanning or MRI. From this, a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist will be able to determine an appropriate treatment plan. This may initially involve techniques to reduce your pain.

This may include: Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy to accelerate the healing process to the injured area, reduce swelling and inflammation and therefore provide futher significant pain relief. A five star rating has been awarded to this modality, and more information can be found on Cold or Low Level laser Therapy, under our “Pain Relief” section. It may also be beneficial to limit your neck and shoulder activity.

Anti-inflammatory medications may be taken and it would also be advantageous to seek out a physical therapy such as Chiropractic or Physiotherapy. When your pain has been reduced sufficiently a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist will be able to provide you with a series of stretching and strengthening exercises designed to return you back to every day normal and sporting activities, and reduce the chances of your neck pain re-occurring.

Neck Pain

The neck or “cervical spine” has 7 vertebrae that allow the head and neck to move freely in all directions with a considerable amount ease.

Any of these symptoms can occur not just at any part of the spine, but can also radiate out into the arms or into the head too causing headaches.

What Do I do Now?

Treatment may include manipulation, mobilization, acupuncture or even Laser Therapy (please refer to our section on Low Level Laser Therapy).

Cervicogenic headaches

Cervicogenic headaches are defined as headaches originating from the neck. The location is typically at the back of the head, sides and top of the head as well as around the forehead and eyes affecting one or more of the above regions at once. These headaches can be located on one or both sides of the head. Cervicogenic headaches are usually associated with dysfunction of the upper neck which can present itself as neck pain or local tenderness, reduced neck range of motion and exacerbation of the headaches by neck movement. The past history of neck trauma is typical for this type of headaches.

The Cervicogenic headaches are caused by irritation of nerve endings of injured joints, ligaments, muscles and discs of the neck. The nerve endings in the injured areas send pain signals up the upper nerves of the neck to the brain causing “cross wiring” with the fibers of the trigeminal nerve (one of the nerves in the head) which is responsible for perception of the head pain thus causing the headaches.

Neck pain as well as “whiplash” (WAD) injuries and both conditions can result in headaches and all three are commonly treated by Chiropractors.
The treatment is focused on the small joints in the back of the neck called facet joints that are responsible for neck pain. When these joints dysfunction but injury to the muscles he nerve fibres that innervate / act as sensors for these facet joints also serve to act as sensors to parts of the head. When these facet joints dysfunction these sensors become active, the brain cannot clearly differentiate

The neck or cervical spine and cervical spondylosis

The neck or cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae that begin at the base of the skull and end in the upper torso. The structures of the neck are the bones and the ligaments provide stability to the spine. The muscles also provide support and protection to the structures of the neck as well as allowing for the motion. The neck supports the head allowing a significantly wider range of movement comparing to the other regions of the spine. However, the neck has less protection than the rest of the spine, the neck can be vulnerable to disorders and injury that result in pain, stiffness and restrict motion.

The cervical spine starts at the base of the skull. Seven vertebrae make up the cervical spine with eight pairs of cervical nerves. The individual cervical vertebrae are abbreviated C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7. The cervical nerves are also abbreviated; C1 through C8.

What is cervical spondylosis?

Cervical spondylosis is a cause of neck pain. It tends to develop after the age of 30, and becomes more common with increasing age. The underlying cause is the age-related degeneration or wear and tear of the vertebrae and discs in the neck.

Everybody develops a degree of degeneration in the vertebrae and discs as we become older. However, cervical spondylosis is a term used if the degree of degeneration is more severe, and causes more symptoms whatever one’s age.

As the ‘discs’ degenerate, they become thinner. The vertebrae develop rough bony edges. The nearby muscles, ligaments, and nerves become irritated by these degenerative changes which can cause symptoms of pain.

What are the symptoms of cervical spondylosis

Symptoms may vary from mild to severe, having a flare up of symptoms by over-use of the neck, or by spraining a neck muscle or ligament.

Symptoms include:

The neck pain may spread to the base of the skull and into the shoulders. Any movement of the neck can make the pain worse. The pain sometimes spreads down an arm, hand or even fingers. This is caused by irritation of a nerve which goes to the arm from the spinal cord in the neck. The pain is prone to flare ups from time to time; some people may also develop chronic and persistent pain.

Some neck stiffness, particularly after a night’s rest.

Headaches may occur from time to time. The headaches often start at the back of the head just above the neck and travel over the top to the forehead.

Numbness, pins and needles or weakness may occur in part of the arm or hand. Tell a doctor if these symptoms occur as they may indicate a problem with a ‘trapped nerve’.

What is neck pain?

Neck pain is a very common medical condition, and one seen many times by Chiropractors. Neck pain can come from many different disorders and diseases which affect the tissues in the neck, such as degenerative disc disease, neck strain, “whiplash”(WAD), herniated disc, or a pinched or trapped nerve or nerves. Neck pain is also referred to as cervical pain.

Symptoms

Neck pain is associated with a dull ache or aching around the afflicted area and will become worse as the neck is moved. Other symptoms associated with neck pain include numbness, tingling, tenderness, sharp and shooting pains, headaches, difficulty swallowing, pulsations, dizziness or light-headedness. It is also possible for the neck glands to swell.

Treatments for Neck Pain

Neck pain treatment options include rest, ice applications, physical therapy chiropractic manipulation, local injections of cortisone or anesthetics, muscle relaxants, analgesics, and surgical procedures. Cold or Low Level Laser Therapy is also a 5 star form of therapy /treatment.

Neck and back pain are usually common conditions or injuries to the neck and back. The pain may come on gradually, or it may be acute and come on suddenly. Bad posture is a common cause in the onset of this pain but it is not the only cause. Chiropractors understand the various causes of neck pain, and can offer advice.

Causes and Risk Factors of Cervical disc injuries

Most cervical disc syndromes are caused by injuries that involve hyperextension, which results in compression of the anatomic structures.

Flexion injuries in the cervical area do not result in nerve compression.

Symptoms of Cervical disc injuries

Pain, loss of sensation, new sensations and weakness are the main signs and symptoms of cervical disc injury. The most common symptom is pain and it is usually the only one. Rarely, cervical disc injury is complicated by compression of either a cervical nerve root or even more rarely by compression of the spinal cord. When compression of the nervous tissue occurs, patients will report abnormal sensations other than pain and will report losing strength in one arm (nerve root compression) or in both arms and legs (spinal cord compression).

1. Pain is the most common complaint and can be felt in the neck or arm.

a) Pain is usually limited to the neck and upper back between the shoulder blades. It occurs because of low-grade inflammation of the disc and the cervical vertebral joints. While the disease is chronic, inflammation can flare up after a minor added injury or for other reasons that are not yet well understood. Less commonly, neck and shoulder pain occur because the disc bulges acutely (herniates) and stretches the posterior longitudinal ligament. With conservative treatment, this pain usually goes away in a few weeks, but it is likely to happen again, especially if the affected individual does not change his/her lifestyle.

b) Rarely, the pain will be felt down the arm. This pain can feel like lightning, caused or aggravated by movements of the neck, or can be dull and persistent. Pre-existing neck pain is also present in many individuals. After the arm pain starts, some people report feeling less pain in their neck.
