Sports Injuries

Sports Injuries are possibly the most common reasons for visiting a chiropractor. Chiropractors Coventry see a lot of Sports Injuries - the most can be treated by a chiropractor without the need for major surgery, although it may take more than one session to treat the problem.

Sports Injuries

Two of the most common sports injuries and their treatments and causes are outlined below.

Tennis Elbow

Although this injury is mostly experienced by tennis players (hence the name), a lot of non-tennis players can also suffer from it. Tennis elbow commonly occurs when there is repeated extension or overuse of the wrist against resistance- such as hitting a tennis ball with a racquet.
There are a few ways of treating tennis elbow without resorting to surgery.

•    An ice pack on the joint for around 15 minutes can help, especially if it is applied several times a day.
•    Coventry chiropractors can treat the injury with cold laser therapy- the laser light calms down the inflammation and promotes healing in the tissue.
•    Although some sports injuries require mobility as soon as possible to ensure that the joint doesn’t seize up, rest is required to treat tennis elbow. A brace or support of some kind can also be useful.

It is obviously important that the chiropractor diagnoses the injury correctly. They can also give advice on painkillers and any factors which may lead to the onset of tennis elbow in the future.

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone; around 13% f running injuries are cause by Achilles tendonitis.
Achilles tendonitis is another sports injury that can be treated by a chiropractor with cold laser therapy. Laser light reduces swelling which in turn leads to decreased pain and a faster return to normal joint and muscle function.
As a temporary measure, a heel pad will raise the heel and take the strain off the Achilles tendon.

Chiropractors Coventry also advise rest while the tendon is healing- the worst thing you could do would be to make a rapid return to sport.
