Deltoid Muscle Injuries
If you have injured the deltoid muscle (in the shoulder), there are several things you must do in order to help it to heal.
When first injured:
• Apply ice for the first twenty- four hours, fifteen minutes at a time.
To regain and rebuild strength:
• Light exercises- four sets of ten repetitions, three times a week (your chiropractor or physiotherapist can advise you).
• Gradually build up the weight to strengthen the muscles.
• Athletes should ease down on training for two or three weeks but it is unlikely they need to stop unless they are getting pain.
Rotator Cuff
To help the rotator cuff muscles to recover:
• Rest the shoulder
• Use at least 7 times a day for the first couple of days following an injury
• Apply ice for no more than 15-20 minutes with the appropriate ice pack, or wrap the ice in thin towel to prevent ice burn.
• Medication can be helpful in controlling the pain .
Dislocated Shoulder
Treatment for a dislocated shoulder comes in two parts. Firstly, to protect the shoulder joint and prevent further damage, rest the arm in a sling. Secondly it is important to receive medical attention as soon as possible. The shoulder should be reduced (this means put back in place) by a medical professional as soon as possible. NEVER attempt to put it back yourself as you may cause further damage.
A X-Ray should be taken prior to reduction to rule out fractures, but a post reduction X-Ray must always be taken.
