Hip pain and treatment
What causes arthritis?
The causes of hip arthritis vary depending on the type of arthritis. Scientists are currently examining the roles of major factors including genetics and lifestyle in development of arthritis.
There are three basic types of arthritis that may cause hip pain: osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis (most commonly rheumatoid arthritis) and traumatic arthritis.
What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis, or wear and tear, is the most common type of arthritis affecting mainly middle-aged and older people. This is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. In degenerative arthritis the cartilage providing cushioning to the join begins to erode with the bones eventually beginning to rub on each other causing pain and stiffness. The exact cause of osteoarthritis is unknown.
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the synovium (inner lining of the joint). This inflammation releases chemicals that thicken the synovium and damage the cartilages and bone of the joint. This leads to further inflammation of the synovium causing pain and swelling.
What is inflammatory arthritis?
In inflammatory arthritis the immune system, for unknown reasons, mistakenly attacks the tissue that lines and cushions the joints. As a result, the cartilage wears away, the hip often becomes stiff. A well-known example is rheumatoid arthritis.
What is traumatic arthritis?
This type of arthritis usually follows serious hip injury or fracture that can lead to a condition called avascular necrosis when the blood supply to the ball portion (the femoral head) of the thighbone is cut off and the bone begins to wither. As a result, the surrounding cartilage begins to degenerate, producing pain and other symptoms.
