Below is a list of the most common shoulder injuries treated by Chiropractors Coventry.

AC Joint Sprain

This is where the clavicle or collar bone meets the acromion process of the scapular. It’s the bony area on top of the shoulder, and injury can occur to the joint by falling onto the shoulder, elbow or an outstretched arm.

Dislocated Shoulder

One of the most common traumatic sporting injuries and occurs frequently in contact sports such as rugby or any high impact sport. Shoulder dislocations come in anterior or posterior dislocations.

Fracture of the clavicle

This shoulder injury, involving a fracture of the collarbone or clavicle. This bone is normally fractured as a result of falling badly with an outstretched arm or onto the shoulder.

Glenoid Labrum injury

Shoulder pain resulting from damage to the lining of the cavity the end of the upper shoulder bone.

Impingement syndrome

The rotator cuff muscles control rotation of the shoulder. These muscles are put under a immense strain especially in throwing sports. During impingement, rotator cuff tendons become trapped inside the shoulder joint; repeated impingement will also lead to inflammation, this may result in further impingement and trapping of the inflamed tendons.

The Supraspinatus muscle runs along the top of the shoulder blade and inserts via the tendon at the top of the shoulder, this is called humerus bone. This muscle is used to raise the arm up sideways.

Inflammation of the Subscapularis Tendon

The Subscapularis muscle starts from the underside of the shoulder blade and inserts at the front of the upper arm, called the humerus. A partial rupture of the muscle is far more common than a complete rupture

Pectoralis Major Muscle or Tendon Strain

The Pectoralis Major Muscle is a stronge large  muscle which lies at the front of the chest. Its function is to rotates the arm inwards, and brings the arm horizontal across the body, it also brings the arm from above the head down and raises the arm from the side upwards. It normally ruptures at the point where it inserts into the arm bone, called the humerus.

Pectoralis Major Tendon Inflammation

The insertion of the tendon into the arm bone (humerus) can become inflamed. It is common in vigorous activities such as swimming and basketball.

Rupture of the Long Head of the Biceps

The biceps muscle divides into two tendons short and long, at the shoulder the long tendon runs over the top of the humerus bone and upper arm and attaches to the top of the shoulder blade. However a rupture is rare in young people but far more common in older ones.

Inflammation of the Long Head of the Biceps

Inflammation of this tendon is a common complaint, especially with people that use the biceps vigorously in sport or in the work place.

Subacromial Bursitis

Under the supraspinatus tendon there is a bursa or small sack of fluid used to help lubricate the moving tendon. This bursa can become trapped in the shoulder; the result may cause pain and inflammation.

Deltoid Muscle Strain

The deltoid muscle is the large muscle on the shoulder, and has three parts; the front is called the anterior, middle and back called the posterior. The muscle raises the arm up sideways. The front part helps to raise the arm up forwards (flexion) and the back part helps to raise the arm up backwards (extension).

Dislocation of the Sterno Clavicular Joint

The clavicle or collar bone connects to the sternum, or breast bone in the middle of the chest at the top. If the shoulder receives a server or sudden impact this joint may become damaged.

Fracture of the Neck of the Humerus

A fracture to the neck of the humerus is often caused by falling onto an outstretched hand or direct impact to the shoulder.

Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis

A frozen shoulder also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that occasionally occurs in older people but woman seem to be more prone to this condition than men, it’s the joint and the surrounding capsule that becomes inflamed. This in turn leads to a significant loss in mobility.

Winged Scapula

Winged scapula is a shoulder injury or condition in which the scapula or shoulder blade sticks out at the back.
