Cold laser Therapy/Treatment

The lasers used at Central Chiropractic Physiotherapy Clinic are certified as Cold Laser.  For the past 30 years the technology of Cold Laser Therapy (also known as Low Level Laser Therapy) has been formally accepted in North America and in many other parts of the world such as Europe, Russia and Japan.  In all this time there have been no recorded long-term adverse effects from low level laser therapy.  It is considered to be non-invasive, painless and safe.

Cold Laser Therapy uses laser light energy to stimulate cells to function optimally.  In the body, light sensitive chromophores and other elements within the cell absorb energy, initiating a series of important photochemical changes such as increased production of ATP. The mitochondria and Kreb’s Cycle stimulation initiates the production of ATP, providing the cell with the extra energy needed to accelerate the healing process and positively influence pain.  These activities can occur in all types of cells and includes ligament, nerves, cartilage and muscle.

Flat Feet; Pes Planus; Fallen arches; Pronation of feet

Definition   

Pes planus is a condition where the arch or instep of the foot collapses. The medial border of the foot is close to, or in contact with the ground. It is usually associated with some degree of twisting outwards of the foot. Pes planus is also called over-pronation.

Causes   

Flat feet are a common condition. All infants have flat feet for the first two years of standing and walking. In toddlers, the longitudinal arch has not yet developed well therefore flat feet are considered normal. The arch develops in childhood, and by adulthood, most people have developed normal arches.

In some cases the cause of flat feet is congenital. Painful flat feet in children may be caused by a condition called tarsal coalition. In tarsal coalition, two or more of the bones in the foot fuse together, limiting motion and often leading to a flat foot.

Flat foot can be caused by muscle weakness or paralysis.

Symptoms

When flat feet develop into adulthood they can cause many problems. Adults with flat foot often suffer with foot strain. Foot strain is due to strain of tarsal ligaments and is due to longstanding foot deformity. The ligaments of the foot are inadequately protected by the muscles. The main symptom is tired, aching feet worse on standing and walking. Legs can feel heavy due to overworking of the calf muscles. If the problem persists it can lead to osteoarthritis of the tarsal joints. This is a result of chronic faulty foot biomechanics.

Treatment

Treatment is not recommended for children under the age of three. Children and adolescents are advised to do leg strengthening exercises. Specific exercises to strengthen the intrinsic muscles of the feet are also thought to be beneficial. Adults most certainly need orthotics. Chiropractors take x-rays to aid their diagnosis. In emergency situations x-ray results are available immediately. You can request your x-rays at your local hospital. This normally takes 7-14 days.

The results then are sent to your doctor or GP in due course. The results of these x-rays will be available from your GP however the timescales still depends on the quality of service from your GP or Doctor.

Osteopaths

Most osteopaths rely on experience in assessing the patient without the benefit of the X-rays. In particular cases some mistakes can be made depending on the practitioner.

Chiropractors of the British Chiropractic Association are trained in interpreting X-ray and MRI scans thus allowing for the most appropriate treatment to be administered. Chiropractors have assisted when congenital abnormalities or cancer being detected for the first time and patients have turned to chiropractors when they have been disappointed with not achieving any progress when seeing physiotherapists or osteopaths.

This has undoubtedly helped Chiropractors to move forward into the third position in primary healthcare worldwide, leaving osteopaths and physiotherapists behind. This is due to patients understanding the chiropractic approach to health care.

Central Chiropractic Clinic Coventry is pleased to offer Digital X-rays as a method of diagnosis. Some patients who arrive at the clinic for chiropractic treatment may never have had an X-ray before and may have questions about it.

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray will be used when Chiropractors cannot immediately work out what the problem is. An X-ray is a quick and painless procedure that is very commonly used to determine problems with bones and occasionally soft tissue. The Central Chiropractic Clinic, Coventry, offers ‘same-day’ treatments- they can hold an initial consultation and assess you on the same day, meaning that if there is a need for an X-ray, it is likely to be done on the day you initially go in. You may have another X-ray towards the end of your treatment, to see if the prescribed treatment is working.

X-Ray Procedure

If an X-ray is requested, you will be taken to a private cubicle where you may be asked to put on a hospital gown. You will then be taken to the X-ray room and asked to either lie on the table or sit on a chair next to it, depending on the part of the body. Using the X-ray machine, a photograph will be taken. This does not hurt; the machine makes a whirring noise as the photo is taken, but that is all. Once the X-ray is over, it is the decision of the chiropractor what happens next; they may keep you at the Clinic for a while to discuss treatment, or they may send you straight home with instructions to come back for a further appointment.
